Joanna Foster is an actor, playwright, singer, and composer who has worked extensively in theatre and television in Britain. She has worked regularly for the BBC and played leading roles at The Royal Shakespeare Company and The Royal National Theatre.

Joanna's new play 'The Inn of the Dawn Horse' based on the life and work of the artist Leonora Carrington, 

had a rehearsed reading at Soho Theatre in May 2019 with choreographer Liz Ranken and leading actress Flora Spencer-Longhurst, and further development at Chats Palace in October 2022

Joanna played Miriam in the 2016 television series of the Bible

Joanna performs regularly with her acapella group Anima

Inspirational songs of enchantment and soul quests are by group leader Joanna Foster who weaves a magical mix of world influences, jazz and soul.

Following in the footsteps of Bobby Mcferrin and Sweet Honey in the Rock, Anima take acapella singing onto another level, weaving their voices together with such skill that it is hard to know where one voice ends and another begins.

The rich diversity of these four actor/singers ranges from acting with The Royal Shakespeare Company to singing jazz, folk and pop and performing at The Royal Opera House.

Singers are Cleo Bayley, Joanna Foster, Camilo Mendura, Matt Lane and Barbara Gellhorn.


Joanna appeared in Dalston Songs by Helen Chadwick at Chats Palace Arts Centre in October 2016 she followed this with a concert tour of House of Light again with Helen Chadwick in February and March 2017.

Dalston Song's is a song theatre performance created and composed by Helen and directed and choreographed by Steven Hoggett based on interviews with Helen’s neighbours in East London

She toured in 2014 and 2015 with The Chalk Circle Collective, performing songs from Brecht’s The Caucasian Chalk Circle. The show, with a set of thrilling new interpretations of Brecht songs by Kirsty Martin, breathes new life into Brecht’s classic story of social unrest, loyalty, and justice.
